Frequently asked questions

Selling

What do I do if I want to sell something?

Call us. We will arrange a home visit, within a 30 mile radius, and free appraisal of the items you want to sell.  We can arrange for transportation and storage until the next auction. Catalogue entries are welcome before the sale or on the day by arrangement and before 9.30am. Remember, the earlier you contact us before a sale the better the lot position in the catalogue.

Are there any hidden costs for sellers?

No there are no hidden extra costs – there is just a standard entry fee per lot.

(A lot is an item or collection of items)

If my items sell, when and how do I get my money?

Vendors are sent settlement statements and cheques within 7 working days of the end of the auction.

What if my item doesn’t sell?

Usually less than 5% of items are unsold, smaller items are stored, returned or sold at a subsequent auction sale. Larger items need to be collected to avoid storage charges.

Buying

What sort of things can I buy at your auctions?

Our auctions are an ever changing mix of items, but include such things as decorative glassware, pottery, militaria, ephemera, jewellery, old toys, model railways, stamps, pictures, maps, old engravings, small furniture, treen, metalware, wooden tools, garden statuary, war memorabilia, vintage clothing, rock & pop memorabilia, Dinky toys, old & modern effects

How often do you run the auctions?

Hugo’s Auction events usually happen on the first Saturday of the month, starting at 11am and usually ending by about 1.30pm. We sell up to 300 lots at each auction, extra auctions are run as necessary and are advertised on our web-site.

I’ve never been to an auction before.  How do I bid?

You need to register with us when you arrive.  We will give you a bidding card which you should hold up when you are bidding, if you are the successful bidder the auctioneer will note your bidding number and ‘knock’ the item down to you.

What is a commission bid ?

We offer a free commission bidding service for customers who can't attend the sale so we bid on your behalf, if your commission bid is successful we will contact you after the auction.

I live outside the UK, how do I bid for items in your auction ?

Send us an email with your details and the commission bid 24 hours before the auction sale, or contact us if you require our telephone bidding service.

What if I scratch my nose?

Don’t worry – our auctioneer will usually know if you are actually bidding or just scratching!  If he is in any doubt he will ask!
